The Method
The NORTHSTAR Method™
At the core of Built By Norman lies the NORTHSTAR Method™, which is based on a simple but decisive assumption: sustainable performance requires direction before effort. Without clear direction, discipline becomes fragile and execution inconsistent, especially under pressure.
High-performing men do not need more motivation. They need better alignment. The North Star is not a vague vision. It is your ideal self and your overarching goal: the outcome that gives direction and meaning. Overarching goals are identity-based. They define who you are becoming, not just what you are doing.

Why the method has this name
The name already describes the method.
NOR (North)
Your direction. Your point of orientation. It reminds you every day where you want to develop.
✦ (The Shift)
The decisive step. Not only your behaviour changes, but also the way you see yourself.
MAN (Identity)
The man, father, leader and entrepreneur you want to be. Your daily decisions bring you step by step closer to him.
The three levels of goals
The NORTHSTAR Method™ works across three interacting levels of goals. Together they form a closed loop in which actions strengthen systems, systems stabilize identity, and identity simplifies action. That structure allows progress even when execution is temporarily interrupted, because direction remains intact.
1. The North Star
The “who”. Overarching goals, identity-based.
This is who you want to become. The man behind the leader. Long-term and identity-driven. It creates meaning, and meaning creates consistency.
This is critical because identity-based goals reduce friction. When you see yourself as this man, you no longer ask “Should I train today?” You ask: “What would I do today to stay aligned with the man I am?”
Example
I am a disciplined, resilient leader who protects his energy, leads with presence, and maintains his standards in every phase.
2. The system
The “how”. Intermediate goals, process-based.
The routines, systems and processes that move you closer to your North Star. Medium-term and strategic. Leaders operate in complexity: if the system is not defined, execution turns into improvisation, and improvisation creates inconsistency.
This level also covers the areas your identity should show up in. For most entrepreneurs and leaders these are health, performance, energy and presence.
Example
I train three times per week, use a fixed nutrition framework on workdays, and protect my sleep with a non-negotiable rule.
3. The execution
The “what”. Subordinate goals, action-based.
Concrete actions in daily and weekly life. Short-term and tactical. This is where your identity becomes visible, because every action is a proof of how you want to live.
Examples
Monday, 6:30 a.m. upper-body training. Tuesday lunch is always the same meal. Two-hour screen cutoff before sleep.
The loop that makes the method resilient
Actions strengthen systems. Systems give your core areas stability. And identity simplifies action. Even when sessions drop due to travel or overload, you do not “fall out”. You return to alignment. You do not restart motivation. You realign.
When a business trip comes in, appointments change your plan or the load increases, you do not need a restart. You re-align and continue where you stopped.

Why the method starts with identity
Most health and fitness programmes focus on results. The NORTHSTAR Method™ starts with the person who makes those results possible: you.
Executives fail with classic plans because those plans usually start at the bottom. They focus on actions and hope identity will follow. In executive life that fails, because the environment constantly interrupts actions. The method reverses this logic: direction stabilizes the system, the system protects action, and when actions become consistent, identity reinforces itself.
That is why the method does not begin with the question “What do you want to achieve?” It begins with a more important one: “Which man do you want to be?”
The exercise
The North Star Exercise
A good North Star helps you make the right decisions in everyday life. It gives you a clear direction, even when your life changes. A meaningful North Star is specific enough to guide decisions and broad enough to remain valid across different life phases.
Formulate it as a statement about the man you want to be. It does not have to be perfect. It has to show you the direction in difficult moments.
Your sentence
I am the kind of man who ______, even when ______, because ______.
Example
I am the kind of man who protects his energy and strength, even when my calendar is full, because my presence carries responsibility.
This sentence becomes your internal compass. It ends daily debates and makes health a part of leadership. It is not meant to motivate you. It is meant to orient you.
A clear North Star also develops over time. Your everyday life, your responsibility and your priorities change. So it is worth reviewing it regularly and adjusting it to your current phase of life.
The three tools
Each pattern has a worksheet that makes the method practical. Start with the one that sounds most like your week.
